I’ve been a SuperGrok subscriber since December 2025.
People who follow Digital Dreams know that we rely on heavily Grok’s image and video generation model, Imagine, in order to create the type of content that we publish on the website.
For people who are new to the hobby or searching for an AI platform that is approachable, there’s a lot of conflicting reports and misinformation about Grok and its image generation model, Imagine.
I worry sometimes that people who have good ideas and want to make AI content will be discouraged because of disinformation. So this is an attempt to provide accurate and truthful information about the current state of Grok and the history of updates that led up to this point.
Where possible I will try to provide links and screenshots to corroborate my statements.

This is a timeline of the major Grok Updates, Controversies, and Censorship claims as I understand them:
October 2025
Although not officially listed, there appears to have been some stealth update to Grok which allowed users to create NSFW content.
There are a lot of anecdotal accounts of content creation around this time, but there’s no real documentation of what types of NSFW content people were creating before or after this change.
NOTE: even in October 2025, which many users regard as a time of generally laxed moderation, users were still complaining about strict moderation.

November 2025
Grok 4.1 Update – many users regard this update as causing Grok to no longer be viable for NSFW content creation. Take that with a grain of salt as it’s not well documented what people were creating in terms of images and video prior to November 2025.
January 2026
The Deepfake Controversy.
There is sustained news coverage and public outcry over reported exploits being used to enable Grok to produce deepfake porn.

Musk and xAI publicly state that they’re working on improving safety measures. This results in several countries moving to restrict or regulate Grok – including Australia and several states in the EU.

This likely resulted in a different content moderation model for the Android platform.
It is also the reason why the age verification method changed and required logging into the browser-based Grok in order to verify age and turn on NSFW content creation in the settings.
There were also several improvements to image and video generation – specifically the availiability of multiple aspect ratios [9:16, 16:9, 2:3, 3:2, 1:1] and the ability to produce 720p video in 6 second increments.

February 2026
Grok 4.2 is released. There is now an option to create 10 second videos [Previously only 6 second videos were possible].
On February 24, 2026 the “Extend” feature is officially released [although some users got the update early]. There is now an option to extend videos for a total duration of 30 seconds.
A minority of users complain that increased content moderation has made the platform unusuable for NSFW content creation.
Note that in February Digital Dreams released 90s Channel Surfing Part 04 which featured what could fairly be described as excessive female nudity:
March 2026
Free tier users reportedly begin to experience a more restrictive experience with a limited number of generations for images and video. It is clear that xAI intends to phase out the free tier for image and video generation.
By the middle of March several tech sites are declaring that “Free Grok is Dead:”

April 2026
On April 1st an update rolls out which offers 2 image generation models: Quality and Speed.
It is not immediately apparent how those 2 models function.
Content moderation initially appears to have become more strict [or at least different].
I wrote 2 blog posts exploring the changes and making comparisons to before and after April 1st:
After some test runs wtih Speed and Quality, it is apparent that Speed is the image generation model that was the default model from October 2025 to April 2026. Quality is a different model which appears to be similar to Qwen and Z-Image Turbo – it tends towards a more hyper-realistic style and in certain situations has better prompt adherence than Speed.
The April updates do officially kill free tier imave and video generation. The free tier of users are no longer able to access image or video generation, as that is now a SuperGrok feature.
Anecdotally, some users report being unable to create ANY NSFW content. There appear to be regional differences, with the USA being less restrictive.
A minority of users complain that increased content moderation has made the platform unusuable for NSFW content creation.
Some time around April 15th another update is rolled out which may have changed the video generation model. Some users report a drop in quality of videos both in terms of image quality and resolution as well as audio quality. Anecodtal information suggests that not everyone experienced this update at the same time.
Some users also report that content moderation has tightened, with some users reporting they are unable to generate ANY NSFW content.
Note that “A Gentle Madness” was published on April 9, 2026 and we noted that content moderation had appeared to have eased slightly as images that would not generate videos suddenly became responsive to prompts:
Anecodtally, it appears that the number of video generations per day has been decreased and the reset counter is now calibrated to 12 hour intervals instead of the more dynamic 4 hour intervals that previously existed.
Some users report that they are receiving error messages due to high server demand. That appears to be an issue for free tier users.

May 2026
On May 1, 2025 a new update roled out the Agent feature for image and video creation.
When that initial update was applied, the Edit function was temporarily disabled.
Later updates revealed that it was now possible to upload images created in Grok and edit them. This was an important update because it allowed for more sophisticated edits using two or more reference images.
Edits on uploaded images seems to be restricted to desktop use at this time.
By the middle of May, Grok users begin to report that image and video generation rate limits have been severely throttled.

Digital Dreams does some independent testing of this:
In testing, Digital Dreams hit the daily rate limit for Quality images at 62 generations [36 successful attempts and 26 moderated results]. With Speed images, the limit is higher as Digital Dreams generated 117 images without hitting the daily limits.
For video the limits were much tigther. For 720p videos, Digital Dreams hit the daily limit at 18 attempts [only 2 attempts successfully generated a video]. For 480p videos, Digital Dreams hit the daily limit at 28 attempts [12 attempts successfully generated videos].

This leads to an update in Grok which provides a countdown for when the rate limits are reached:

There is no official comment from xAI regarding the new rate limits, which leads to speculation by users.

There is further confusion when Elon Musk makes comments that suggest that the Anthropic deal is only a temporary arrangement:

My Personal Experience:
I make softcore erotica using Grok as my primary tool for doing that. I’ve been pretty consistently producing content since January 2026.
The decision to pay for SuperGrok was not a difficult one. In December I saw a user on Reddit post a long format video that was made with Grok. He explained the prompts and the video generation process. It seemed intuitive and simple enough that I thought it was a tool I could use effectively, and the quality was better than most of the AI content I had seen up to that point.
While I enjoyed using Grok to create images and video, I did feel constrained by the 2:3 aspect ratio.
The January updates which added additional aspect ratios was a big deal in terms of being able to produce more cinematic and immersive content.
It’s hard to be taken seriously when the videos you make are all in the same vertical aspect ratio as a cellphone. While I primarily work in 3:2 aspect ratio, I appreciate that 16:9 is there and have plans for certain projects that will utilize that.
The fact that the January update also introduced 720p video was also a huge qualityh of life improvement. While Grok had the ability to upscale 480p videos to UHD quality, upscales never look as good as videos that were produced natively at higher resolutions, and 720p was noticeably higher quality video.
The February update which added the option to create 10 second videos was a HUGE quality of life improvement that made it significantly easier to create content and experiment with different types of scenes and dialogue. For the first time, I had longer videos which could be cut to create interesting edits, and the ability to create scenes that had dramatic pauses in dialogue delivery.
The March update which added the EXTEND feature is MASSIVELY UNDERRATED – the ability to create 30 second clips vastly expands the ability of a user to utilize Grok for visual storytelling purposes – the types of shots and scenes that can be created now are leagues beyond what was possible back in January, where everything was limited to 6 second video clips.
The April update has been confusing. I agree that content moderation feels different now in terms of how certain prompts are interpreted or moderated – the fact that there are now 2 image models makes it difficult to draw conclusions – at times Speed seems more permissive, and at other times Quality seems to allow content that Speed can’t do. I do not agree that content moderation has gotten more restrictive.

While working on all of that, I was also working on a longer video project which involves naked girls doing video game reviews being stalked by a sinister organization called the 108 Goons:
Retro Rabbits was the first project where a significant portion of it was made using tools other than Grok. The majority of the end credits sequence was created using Seedream v4.5 and Seedance v1.5 Spicy. The reason for that had to do with the tecnical limitations of Grok – at that time, it was no possible to create an edit using two uploaded images.
So in order to eventually have the characters of Eva and Hailey appear in the same shots at the same time, those images had to be created using Seedream v4.5. It was a long process that was also expensive [I probably spent around $30 creating the images and videos].
With the May 2026 updates this is no longer an issue.
Because Grok now tags Grok-made images in their metadata, it is possible to create and upload a series of images like this:

While that doesn’t seem like much, that potentially saves dozens of hours of work in the long run when making more complicated videos that involve multiple characters.
It made it possible for Chelsea to visit the Retro Rabbits set:
And she even got to meet Eva and Hailey:
There are still some issues to work out in terms of character consistency regarding height, size, tattoos, etc. But this is so exponentially better than what I had to work with in December 2025 it is staggering.
And that’s what I wanted to say to people who are reading this.
In general, using Grok to make images and videos now is a much better experience than when I started in December 2025 – for the cost of $30 a month, you can generate a LOT of images and video – far more than $30 would allow you to do with any other web-based AI.
Content moderation continues to be an issue, but I cannot say that content moderation is significantly worse than it was in December 2025 – I’ve saved a lot of prompts from the past 4 months and I can still make the same content now as 4 months ago. The archives on this site are proof of that.
Content moderation is both dynamic and contextual.
The moderation can be frustrating sometimes, because it feels inconsistent. And it’s a dynamic system, so it’s not just one rule applied to everyone, it’s a content filter making judgement calls on the fly. Historically there have been periods of stricter moderation and periods of more permissive moderation.
So…that’s the bigger picture.
I suppose some other things that should be noted:
Elon Musk has made a lot of inconsistent statements about what kind of content Grok should be able to produce in terms of more adult-oriented content.
The current standard is that Grok should be able to produce anything that you would see in a PG-13 film.
At times, Musk has indicated that Grok might move to allowing R-rated content. This has not seemingly had any effect on any of the recent Grok updates.
“PG-13” and “R” are very vague content descriptors, so it has never been a useful guideline for determining what is permissible.
The Future of NSFW Content on Grok
For as long as I have been using Grok people have been talking about how the end of NSFW content is coming.
I don’t believe that’s the case – at least not any time soon.
Yes, there have been a lot of public relations and legal issues that stem from NSFW content. The Deepfake scandal in January 2026 directly affected later updates, particulary the April updates.
BUT, if xAI wanted to quickly and easily resolve all the issues that stem from NSFW content, they could have just blocked all NSFW generation back in January when the deep fake scandals happened.
The fact that they haven’t – and still continue to support it – suggests that there are other considerations at play which are keeping NSFW users in the game, so to speak.
And when I say that xAI continues to support NSFW content creation, I mean that.
Scaling back the functionality for free tier users to create NSFW content is unfortunate, because it means some people will simply not be able to use Grok for that purpose. But it’s being done partly because having a paywall helps ensure that a service which provides adult content is only being accessed by adults.
It beneifts the NSFW subscriber base to have those paywalls in place because it protects our access to the service in the face of governmental regulations.
The April 1st update did do something weird to the content filters. AND it got scaled back within a week.
IF the idea is to phase out NSFW content creation, there’s no reason to scale back the content filters.
The May update which created the ability to upload and edit Grok-created images was a feature that was HEAVILY requested by NSFW content creators.
Editing uploaded photos for non-NSFW purposes was never an issue. That is a feature that primarily benefits the subscriber base that wants to be able to produce adult content responsiblty and ethically using Grok.
While I don’t know the data, I suspect that a significant portion of SuperGrok subscribers ARE people who want the ability to easily create adult content using AI. xAI is aware of this as well.
I could be wrong.
But I think the history of the content that I’ve created and the history of updates that I’ve discussed in this post suggests that NSFW on Grok is not going anywhere.
